"Memories of the Alhambra" is a 2018 South Korean sci-fi thriller with elements of romance and fantasy, blending augmented reality gaming with real-life suspense. Produced by Studio Dragon and aired on tvN and Netflix, the series is set against the stunning backdrop of Granada, Spain. Directed by Ahn Gil-ho and written by Song Jae-jung, it stars Hyun Bin as Yoo Jin-woo, a tech CEO caught in a mysterious game, and Park Shin-hye as Jung Hee-joo, a hostel owner who becomes entwined in his dangerous quest.

Official Trailer:

I was going through a rough patch in my life, and the confusion and dilemmas felt overwhelming. As always, I tried to clear my head by distracting myself and thinking about something entirely different. After watching a few K-dramas and K-movies starring Hyun Bin, I became curious to explore more of his projects. A bit of research led me to this series.

The trailer intrigued me instantly, and I searched for it on Netflix. Since it was originally made in Korean, and at the time dubbing wasn’t available in my country, I had to watch it with subtitles. The good thing about watching global content with subtitles is that we get to hear the real voices of the artists and can relate to and understand a completely different language, which in itself is quite exciting. As a cinema enthusiast, I don’t mind subtitles when the project truly captures my attention, and this one certainly did. One episode led to another, and before I knew it, I was completely immersed, binge-watching whenever I could, even hurrying through my other work just to get back to it. The suspense, the thrills, and the subtle romance between the lead characters kept me hooked until I had finished the entire drama.

Having already seen Crash Landing on You and The Negotiation, I was already a fan of Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin, but in this series, I found myself deeply drawn to the character Emma, played by Park Shin-hye. While Hyun Bin’s character has depth, determination, and a strong drive to achieve his goals, Emma stands out as someone who is always there for those she cares about, and for others in general. She is content with what she has, works hard with her whole heart, and pours herself into everything she does.

Emma has now become one of my favorite female characters. From what I understand of her, she always strives to go beyond her limits. She builds her own world with the resources she has inherited and earned, creating a warm, fulfilling space for herself and the people around her. Yet, even in her contentment, she takes bold leaps of faith for her loved ones. She never gives up, especially on the people she cares about. I truly wish there were another season of this series so we could see more of Emma and Jin-woo’s story.

When the series ended and I returned to reality, nothing in my life had changed, there was no sudden magic. But I did feel more energized and inspired by the strength of the characters. That inspiration helped me handle my own challenges with renewed confidence, without needing any magic at all.

This song from the OST, along with the video clips from the series, creates a soul-touching impact on us.
